The Skibell name is one that will be recognized in many Texas communities, especially in the Lubbock, Dallas, and Greenville areas, where the family participated in commercial and real estate ventures. In this videotaped oral history, brothers Albert and Sydney, and Sydney's wife Regina, tell some of the stories and history of their family in pre-war and wartime Poland. Through their narration, the brothers paint a picture of the Orthodox Jewish community in pre-war Suwalki, Poland, and of the grief and chaos of post-war Europe. Except for the four sons who immigrated to the United States, all of the family perished during the Holocaust. In the interview, Albert discusses his vacation-turned-immigration to the United States, and Sydney opens up about time spent in a Siberian labor camp under the Soviets, his miraculous chance reunion with his wife, and their eventual immigration to Texas. Pictured at the very end of the video is grandson and award-winning author Joseph Skibell.
