Dunlap made "Sometimes I Run" while attending Southern Methodist University. He met Maupin after writing to Mayor West Wise to ask for help in locating a suitable subject for his documentary on Dallas nightlife. Wise subsequently put him into contact with the Public Works Department, where an employee referred him to Maupin.
Maupin professes his enjoyment of his job and the outdoors, saying there are times when he "runs down these sidewalks."

Produced by Blaine Dunlap, this film presents a portrait of Stanley Maupin, a nighttime sidewalk flusher for the city of Dallas. The film follows Maupin over the course of a night. As he performs his job, he comments on a wide range of topics: from the ins and outs of his job as a night worker, and tips on places to eat, to the philosophy of finding happiness in life and love, and the secrets to a happy marriage.
