This silent clip reel features scenes of 1950s-era Tyler, Texas. Included is a panorama of downtown Tyler, people working and playing around Tyler, and foogtage of the Rose Festival Parade and rose garden.
The rose industry began in Tyler near the turn of the 20th century after a catastrophic failure of the peach harvest caused farmers to seek alternative crops. To this day, approximately one-fifth of the nation's commercial rose bushes are produced in Smith County. This video is part of the library courtesy of the Tyler Rose Museum, where exhibits include videos and photographs chronicling the area's agricultural history, Rose Festival memorabilia and hand-sewn costumes dating back to 1935.
