New Releases: June 2014

Get ready for summer with this month’s featured New Releases that showcase the annual Luling Watermelon Thump!  Located thirty miles southeast of Austin, Luling has held its annual Thump in late June for over fifty years in celebration of the Luling watermelon industry. The festival features a parade headlined by the Watermelon Queen and her court, contests for best locally grown watermelon, watermelon eating, and, as the main event, the "world" championship watermelon seed spitting contest – the world record of which is said to be over 69 feet.

In this interview adult division 3rd place winner Tim Lang offers some insight into seed spitting techniques, such as “put it on the tip of your tongue, and just shoot it outta there like a cannon!” They train ‘em young in Luling -- this video captures scenes of the kids division spitting contest where one kid is able to spit a seed 15 feet and 8 inches! In this video, we meet the grand prize winner, and don’t miss this interview with the Original Texas Melon Head who fills us in on why the Luling Melon Heads are superior to the California Raisins.

For more on the Luling Watermelon Thump, you can consult this highly entertaining documentary short about the festival, “Spit Farther!” made by University of Texas filmmaker Paul Stekler and featuring Tito Beveridge, owner of Tito’s Handmade Vodka who is a former Seed Spitting Champion!
