Produced by Hal Roach and distributed by Pathé Exchange, Give and Take is a short comedy film starring famed silent film comedian Harold Lloyd and Dallas-born actress Bebe Daniels. In the film, the couple exchanges calling cards following a brief encounter, after which they make arrangements to elope. The footage was first released as part of the short film Bliss (1917). The first and last sequences of that film were repackaged and sold as Give and Take. (In Bliss, the couple elopes after the father of Daniels’ character forbids their marriage.) Bliss was considered a lost film until a print was discovered in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada, in 1978. Lloyd met Roach while both were working as silent film extras in Hollywood. Roach formed his own studio in 1913, after which the friends became collaborators, creating the Lonesome Luke character. Lloyd hired Daniels as a supporting actress in 1914. Daniels continued working alongside Lloyd, with whom she was also romantically involved, until 1919, when she left to pursue dramatic roles.
