In the era before VCRs and DVRs, a person who wanted to record an event off of the television could do so by pointing the film camera towards the screen. Events captured in this manner tend to be significant world events that the filmmaker felt strongly about saving for the future. In this case, the Hackney family recorded footage of President John F. Kennedy’s funeral procession in Washington D.C., followed by footage played in slow motion, presumably by the news station, of Jack Ruby fatally shooting Lee Harvey Oswald in the basement of the Dallas Police headquarters. The latter event played out on live television and was witnessed by millions of viewers.
