About the video

In April 1966, First Lady Lady Bird Johnson traveled across the state of Texas to underscore her commitment to promoting and preserving the natural beauty of the United States. Her trip took her through South, West and Central Texas, with stops for speeches and site-seeing in San Antonio, Big Bend National Park, Fort Davis, and Johnson City. Over the course of the trip Mrs. Johnson was treated to numerous musical performances, dedicated a historic site, hiked along Lost Mine Trail, and took raft trip down the Mariscal Canyon. Throughout the footage are noteworthy images such as the first lady hiking in a white cowboy hat and posing whilst wearing the sombrero borrowed from the leader of a mariachi troupe.
