Barbecue at the LBJ Ranch for Latin American Diplomats
Preceding the April 1967 Punta del Este summit in Uruguay, President Johnson invited the ambassadors to a weekend at the ranch that included one of his famous barbecues. The purpose for the festivities was to provide a casual setting for the attendees to get acquainted before the formal meetings the following week.

1964 Campaign Barbecue at the LBJ Ranch
October 25, 1964 – A barbecue at the LBJ Ranch served as the kick-off event for the First Lady’s three day campaign trail through Texas. Co-hosting the event with Lady Bird Johnson were Texas’s First Lady, Nellie Connally; Mrs. Robert McNamera, wife of the Secretary of Defense; Mrs. Orville Freeman, wife of the Secretary of Agriculture; and Mrs. Willard Wirtz, wife of the Secretary of Labor. Guests at the barbecue were approximately 200 members of the press, mostly women. The event included a tour of the ranch grounds and house, and as usual, was catered by Walter Jetton.
Christmas Tour of LBJ Ranch, 1963
A large crowd of people, both family and press were at the LBJ Ranch on Christmas Day, 1963. Members of the large Johnson family had come for dinner, and the press were there to take the family’s Christmas picture. This footage, made up of silent clips, not in any particular order and with some repetition, captures President Johnson treating members of the press to an extensive tour of the ranch grounds and house, including the dining room, his study, and the master suite, and handing out souvenir ashtrays. According to newspaper reports, the President’s tour caused Christmas dinner to be served very late, and an increasingly irritated First Lady made it clear that her gravy “was not getting better with age.”

Dale Baker Family Home Movies
This compilation of home movies of the Dale Baker family offers a look at family life in late 1950s and early 60s Austin. Family outings to local landmarks such as Deep Eddy, House Park Field, Palmer Auditorium, and Mueller Airport are featured along with the Lyndon Johnson’s ranch in Stonewall. Owner of Dale Baker’s BBQ on Lake Austin Boulevard from 1952 to 1975, Baker and family catered many barbecues at the LBJ Ranch during the 1960s, and footage from these events includes such notable personalities as former Mexican president Adolfo Mateos, CBS television reporter Walter Cronkite, and country music performer Eddy Arnold.

President Ayub of Pakistan Visits Texas, July 15 - 17, 1961
In July 1961, President Mohammad Ayub Khan of Pakistan, accompanied by his daughter Begum Nasir Akhtar Aurangzeb, paid a state visit to the United States which included a stop in Texas. This silent film, shot by Austin film maker Gordon Wilkison, documents his journey to Texas, where he visited San Antonio and Vice President Johnson’s ranch in Stonewall. President Ayub’s Texas journey included some of the standard events of a foreign dignitary’s state visit. Upon landing at Randolf Air Force Base, near San Antonio, he attended a ceremonial military review and parade, and then travelled via motorcade to the Alamo where he spoke and laid a memorial wreath. The final stop in Texas is the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, for a barbecue hosted by Vice President Johnson in President Ayub’s honor. Highlights of the barbecue include entertainment by Master of Ceremonies, Cactus Pryor and musician Eddy Arnold, and the presentation of a saddle and ten gallon hat to the visiting president.

In April 1961, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer of West Germany, accompanied by his daughter Libeth Werhahn, paid a state visit to the United States. After completing talks in Washington, the eighty-five year old Adenaur travelled to Vice President Johnson’s ranch in Texas, fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting the American West. This film, produced by the Lower Colorado River Authority, chronicles his journey through Texas. Chancellor Adenauer’s visit began with a military welcome at Bergstrom Air Force Base, followed by a helicopter ride to the Hill Country, where spent most of his trip. A devout Catholic, the Chancellor attended mass at St. Francis Xavier Church before continuing to the LBJ Ranch for a barbecue held in his honor, and where Vice President Johnson presented him with a saddle and ten-gallon hat. Other stops on his visit included an event held at the Gillespie Fair Ground in Fredericksburg, a helicopter tour of the highland lakes, and the Capitol in Austin where he addressed both chambers of the Texas State Legislature.

America Welcomes President Ayub
In July 1961, President Mohammad Ayub Khan of Pakistan, accompanied by his daughter Begum Nasir Akhtar Aurangzeb, paid a state visit to the United States. This film, produced by the United States Information Service, recounts the events of President Ayub’s trip. Highlights include a state dinner at Mt. Vernon, a visit to the Islamic Center of Washington, and a ticker tape parade in New York City. President Ayub’s visit also included a trip to San Antonio where he toured and laid a wreath at The Alamo, followed by a barbecue at Vice President Johnson’s ranch in Stonewall, TX.
The President - June 1966
This footage, the first of the monthly reports to be produced by The White House Naval Photographic Unit, captures the activities of President Johnson for the month of June 1966. Amongst events captured in this film are President Johnson meeting with foreign leaders including King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Harold Holt of Australia, and President René Schick Gutiérrez of Nicaragua; President Johnson presenting awards, including the Medal of Honor; the President and his advisers planning the bombing of the Hanoi oil fields in Vietnam; President Johnson addressing crowds ranging from Austrian diplomats to Midwestern farmers; and the first family relaxing at the LBJ ranch.
The President - August 1966
This footage, a monthly report produced by The White House Naval Photographic Unit, captures the activities of President Johnson in August 1966. This was a month that saw President engaged in a range of activities that stretched across his roles as a politician and as a private citizen. Captured in this footage are President Johnson’s meetings with foreign dignitaries including Israeli President Zalman Shazar, and Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson; and meeting with General Westmoreland regarding the ongoing conflict in Vietnam. On the domestic front President Johnson spent much of the month touring the Northeast as well as the West to speak to the public about his various domestic policy initiatives including Medicare. August 1966 was a busy month in President Johnson’s personal life, a month that saw him celebrating his 58th birthday and also the wedding of his daughter Luci Baines Johnson to Pat Nugent.
The President - November 1966
This footage, a monthly report produced by The White House Naval Photographic Unit, captures the activities of President Johnson in November 1966. Upon returning from an international tour at the start of the month President Johnson prepared himself to undergo surgery, and therefore spent much of the month at the LBJ Ranch, resting and conducting official business. Highlights of Johnson’s presidency captured in this monthly report include: a meeting with important US officials including Robert McNamara, UN Ambassador Arthur Goldberg, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, former President Dwight Eisenhower, as well as Gerald Ford; press conferences and awards ceremonies held at the LBJ ranch, including an award ceremony at which astronauts Edwin Aldrin and James Lovell are presented with Exceptional Service Medals; the first family also features into the footage including images of President Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson celebrating their 32nd wedding anniversary. As President Johnson spent much of November 1966 preparing for, and then recovering from, surgery there are many images in this footage of Texas, including: the LBJ Ranch, the Municipal City Hall and Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church in Fredricksburg Texas, Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, and the Welhausen School in Cotulla Texas where President Johnson had taught.
The President - September 1967
This footage, a monthly report produced by The White House Naval Photographic Unit, captures the activities of President Johnson in September 1967. For President Johnson September 1967 was a month spent largely in meetings at the White House attempting to push important legislation through congress, and the many shots of President Johnson at the White House capture this. In addition to many meetings throughout the month this footage also records President Johnson meeting with entertainer Bob Hope, announcing his daughter Lynda Bird Johnson’s engagement to Marine Captain Charles S. Robb, hosting a fair at the White House, and surveying the areas of Texas ravaged by Hurricane Beulah. Included with the images of President Johnson are images from the conflict in Vietnam.
