About the Video

A component of his "Great Society" program, President Johnson signed the Higher Education Act of 1965 at his alma mater in San Marcos, Southwest Texas State College, now Texas State University. Smiling students, faculty and guests fill the Strathan Gymnasium awaiting President Johnson and his entourage. Close-ups of the bills and presidential pens are followed by images of the crowd. The President and First Lady arrive accompanied by Congressman J.J. Pickle and College administration. The film documents the signing ceremony inter-cut with shots of the audience applauding. President Johnson hands out numerous pens to colleagues.
