About the Video

These outtakes from the locally produced television program Shield Over Austin, highlight the work of the city’s policemen: on patrol in car, boat and motorcycle, on foot and in training. Among these clips are interesting peeks of the 1960s era urban Austin, including local businesses, a downtown bank and the University of Texas tower.

Dock windowPeople, Places, Things!
Given the license plates visible in various segment, the entire clip appears to date to either 1959 or 1961--probably 1959, since the officers are driving 1958 Plymouth Furies (the "Christine" model).
Corner of 24th and Guadalupe, looking east.
Going north on Congress between 8th and 9th.
Possibly the lobby of Capital National Bank, corner of 7th and Colorado.
Guadalupe Street across from the University Co-op, looking north
Probably shot from the roof of the Driskill panning east to north. First Presbyterian Church is visible in the upper corner. The parking lot is now the site of the Omni Austin hotel.

Possibly Holy Cross Hospital, on East 19th Street.
Pans across the front of St. George's Episcopal Church, at East Avenue and Airport Boulevard.
