About the video

This footage shot by a local network news affiliate includes shots from the chamber of the Texas House of Representatives and from outside the capitol building during services in honor of slain president John F. Kennedy. Also shown is a newspaper salesman along Austin’s Sixth Street with paper’s headline reading “Kennedy-Connally Shot by Assassin.” Additional pre-assassination footage shows Governor John Connally, wife Nellie, President John Kennedy and wife Jacqueline as they arrive in San Antonio, their drive into the city, and Kennedy’s speech.

The "newsboy" is Tom Attra, who sold newspapers downtown from 1928 until 1980. After World War II, he was in charge of all downtown sales for the morning Austin American and the evening Democratic Statesman. He later worked as a valet and greeter both at the Driskill and the Bradford-Austin. Tom also won the Golden Gloves championship in 1942 in the light-heavyweight division.(1) Attra Street in the Mueller development is named for him.     1) Turner, Robyn.
