The Texas Film Sampler
TAMI proudly presents its first online collection of motion pictures representing the variety and wealth of films related to the state.  From home movies and locally produced documentary footage, to military coverage of natural disasters and Hollywood newsreel oddities, Texas films offer an unparalleled look at the unique and complex history of the Lone Star State over the last one hundred years.  This “film sampler,” showcasing films from 1900 to 2002, was designed to illustrate the eclectic nature of the material TAMI features in its collections.

In a sense, the creation of this initial resource underscores TAMI’s goal in championing the value of regional voices in constructing Texas history.  Texas films can help complement, as well as complicate, the national and international depictions of our state.  Additionally, the Texas Film Sampler illustrates the serious need for greater attention to the care and management of this rare material.  Many of the clips seen here are in extremely poor condition.

This online collection serves as the first step in a much larger process in which greater preservation and restoration work will be done.  In the future, we will be able to provide you with a choice of file formats, but for now, technical restrictions require QuickTime in order to view these films.  (Download Quicktime)  But keep checking back with us for future updates – and more unusual, fun, and fabulous Texas film history!
